Wow, George, you really described your "mate" well. So you and he are very much possession-orientated. Things, stuff, objects, rubbish.
So my idea is break the mould and get him something more spiritual. Not a bible, etc, but something that will stir his soul. A book perhaps?
I recommend Jon Krakauers "Into thin air".
You we're stuck for thoughts - try reading more yourself and open up your mind.
Failing that, datasapien has a sound idea.

How about a remote control car? A Build your owb robot kit...
Tickets to a basketball, football or baseball game? A surprise party.. Something new and unusal for his new apartment.

U can buy something for his apartment...like a vase,a painting...or a palm organizer if he is a business man!Or a watch...!If he is a musician...maybe some Cd's !It depends how much are u willing to give and what his profession is...

make you re own art... get all the materials in on his birthday and as the evening goes along everybody can paint something personal on the canvas, make sure its a Hugh canvas and quality materials trust me its a brilliant present ...
