It is a very interesting observation. A cylinder of uniform wall thickness is twice as strong in the transverse direction as compared to the longitudinal direction when pressurised from inside.That is why the man-holes in vertical boilers are all elliptical, cutting out more surface from the transverse side. In the case of an egg, which is not perfect cylinder, it must be the ellipsoid shape that provides this unique property. An egg is much stronger under compression in the vertical direction compared to the lateral direction.

the reason is the the crystal of the egg shell is aranged longitudinally...so when u apply stress in the longitudinal direction ,u might get a more of compresive stress on the structure which makes it to be more stronger
u make a similiar arugumen for bamboo too...

Eggs aint broken longitudionally because o the presence of a white plate like membrane near the ovel end of the egg perpendicular to the long axis of the egg...this membrane doesnt allow the breakage easily...hence...

I've never really noticed that until just now. I've always cracked on the side b/c that's how i learned it - i would assume that one could crack the egg long ways - but i would also assume the egg would tend to crack in the middle anyway? Maybe something to do with the radius and being short/fat in the middle?

Because you have to break more and it breaks unevenly because of the shift in stress. Only the 'traditional way' has the optimum result, no spilling and an easy accessible egg.

it is more rounded latitudinally and the crack is a shorter distance.
imagine cracking any cylinder, twig, stick, whatever. almost always easier to crack the short way through
