America was an English colony, so it used the English system of measurement. Efforts to convert to metric have been only partially successful.

we are not the only country to not use the metric system, there are a few others but very few. It came about by the need for measuring things, so people used common thigs to meaure. ie a foot was literally that the length of your foot. this was then standardized at some point. why don't we change? ignorant public for the most part, it works as is so not bbig deal, the engineers use either system all the time, in some fileds ie medical it is always used

The US tried to convert to the metric system in the 70's but the change never took because people were used to the old units of measurement & America is powerful enough to get away with keeping an obsolete system. Pretty arrogant actually.

Which came first?
You talk like we came up with our units of measure, and I don't know how others are but I do have a good understanding of the metric system of measurement.
So maybe everyone else in the world should only speak english, why doesn't everyone do this and simplify the world?

OOOOPSIE! Wrong hypothesis.
Do a Google search for weights and measures. You will find many countries which use all sorts of different systems, most of which are beyond my skill to understand.

Americans are lazy and couldn't change when we tried to institute the metric system late in the 20th century. The attempt was abandoned, even though the metric system is much simpler. I remember when a 300 million dollar satalite burned up in mars' atmosphere because someone forgot to convert miles to kilometers when doing calculations or some such thing. Oops.
