In the last 75 years radiology has increased from birth, through infancy to adolescence that we now have. There is still much development to occure and new discoveries are being made every day.
In the 1700's? You would have to be joking! (By the way, 18th century means the 1700's not the 1800's for those who don't know".
Any concept of "seeing through the skin" would have been considered as witchcraft. Photography, a forrunner of radiology, had not been invented. Radioactive substances were not discovered.
In the 1950's the dangers of radiation were not known and shops often had devices that you could put yout feet in the bottom of, look in the top of and see how squashed your shoes were in the shoes - ie an xray machine. Not today.
The whole field is now much wider and called "medical imageing" and includes ultrasound, MRI and CT scans. Much more could be said but that will do for now.

If you are talking about X-ray technology for medical purposes, that wasn't invented until the early 20th century. There was none before that.
