...or an officially protected species, and you can import it in to your home country without too much difficulty, does that mean it is perfectly legal for you to keep it as a pet?

In the UK we have an act which came in to power in 1976 regarding endangered animals as pets but I don't think this covers other unusual animals (big cats, other predators etc etc). My question is, could you reasonably and legally keep such animals as pets providing they were adequately and safely housed (presumably an inspection would be required...)

By the way I do not wish to keep such an animal but I'm just asking out of interest! Thanks

Why don't you consult WWF UK?

As you have said, the trade of endangered species is regulated by an international convention, the CITES
http://www.cites.org

However, the status of other wild species depends on the legal system of each country. I live in Argentina, and here it is not legal to keep wild animals as pets, not even those that are considered as pests (as some parrots, for instance).
For the possession to be legal, individuals belonging to wild (ie not domestic) species must be certified to be bred in captivity... and of course, legal ones are more expensive, so lots of people keep illegal pets!

However, once these cases are detected, the animals are sequestered by the authorities and their owners face legal charges.

Sadly, wild animals that have been kept as pets (especially those whose behaviour is very dependent on learning) are extremely difficult to rehabilitate for life in the wild. They end up in zoos or other similar facilities :-(

Here's the UK WWF site:

I just did a quick Search and found several notes and reports about wildlife trade.
Here's an interesting article:

No. Dangerous animals, whether endangered or not, are not legal to be kept as pets. Even cows can not be kept in the city limits as they are considered livestock and can only be kept on farms. Every city has its' own codes regarding such matters but generally speaking only domestic animals can be kept as pets.

There are also laws covering dangerous and exotic animals. You need a licence to keep some kinds of animals.
You cannot keep a big cat in Britain as a pet.

Noin the U.S. it is illegal to keep an animal that is endangered or a wild animal unless you own a sanctuary, which is specially approved and constructed to hold these animals.

In a normal home or apartment (flat), it would be illegal to keep an animal due to local animal ordinances. But many people sneak them in anyway, then abandon the animal when it gets too big for its space or starts to show natural signs of aggression.

Different laws for different types of animals.
Dangerous animals have an act of their own.

You may be able to import it into the country, but you also have to check your state laws.
