it has to do with freezing time. Snow is a small amount of water, frozen quickly. the crystals have a great deal of surface area and impurities, making them appear white.

Solid ice, frozen slowly, is clear. The crystals are bigger, and impurities are pushed out by the aligning molecules in the slowly freezing water.

it just looks that way

has something to do with the spacing of the molecules

i did o level physics, and could have explained it better 25 years ago (ok, 30 years ago.....)
