Tough one. How much 'not hole' did you have in mind?

How about this one? It is nice 45 Euro and in a real 'grachten pand'.

If you're travelling with a group of at least 4 and plan on staying in Amsterdam for at least 4 or 5 nights, then I would rent a houseboat. It is the greatest experience, plus you have a little kitchen that you can cook some meals in. We stayed on the Christiann and it was awesome. Just google houseboats in Amsterdam and you should find what you need. It's much more original than a hotel!

Hostels in Amsterdam tend to be rather better than most people think. I like the "flying pig" hostels (there are two of them, one in the center of town and one one the outskirts) There is also hostel ann-marie which is good. To get descriptions of these and other hostels, try twizi.com. They list places to stay that cost less than 25 dollars a night. Their Amsterdam hostels page is the link below. Happy travels!

Check out Hotel Winston. Its a really cool art-hotel, (though it may be a little pricier ...):http://www.winston.nl/
