the two syllables roll off the tongue easier than the single Charles. also adding 'lee' to a name ending seems to be an easier and less formal way to regard someone. Charles doesn't come out as relaxed as saying charlie.

Charlie is it's own name. My dad's name is Charlie and Chuck is short for Charles.
