The Big Country, Rio Bravo, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance are great films. The Big Country has great music and a great cast, Liberty Valance is a tense tale of a peaceful man pushed too far. Rio Bravo also builds up tension and has a good cast. It's hard to go wrong with John Wayne!

I'm with Mazzy, I like the black and white kind. Many of the movies make my list but my real favorites are the half hour to one hour TV westerns.
Have Gun Will Travel
The Rebel
Colt 45
Tales of Wells Fargo
Wyatt Earp
Bat Masterson
Tales of the Texas Rangers
And the list goes on and on.
Some of the 90 minute shows were OK also
Wagon Train
Hec Ramsey (yeah it was color, to every rule there is an exception)
This answer could literally go on for pages but you get the idea. Thanks, your question brought back some fond memories.

Let me see, where do I start? Oh, Lonesome Dove is the best western of all time. McLintock is good, Big Jake, Rio Bravo, The Comancheros and The Searchers are all good. I guess you can't tell that I like John Wayne, huh? :) Quigley Down Under, Tombstone is also good. American Outlaws is really good also
