Not until now but we cant rule out this question simply if he put him self to improve his bowling especially the reverse swing in which W. Akram is an expert. However still Irfan Pathan is strugling to bowl under pressure conditions or away from home...

But ofcoz he is an upcoming all rounder for india after K. Dev

Anybody can be greater bowler than Wasim. Provided we meets the requirement set for this. Most of Indian bowlers bowl to play, they are sporty. But Pakistan's bowl as they are terrorists. This is major difference which make paki bowlers more deadly.

Irfan is a another Indian bowler. He is good, determined and intelligent bowler. But not terrorist. This is what may keep Wasim above Irfan.
But otherwise Irfan is equally good as Wasim.

Wasim happens to be one of the finest all rounders in the history of cricket.

The question itself is an honour to Irfan!
Dissecting the present day requirements.
Irfan would be burning out faster than wasim.
Both have similiar traits but wasim had more depth and a good backup of superb advise ..
Imran, Sarfaraz...
He had the hunger to go at batsmen and kept them thinking...(though irfan shows flashes of this)
He was more focussed than irfan(maybe lesser endorsments and more demands from captain)
He worked himself to extremes especially with the Diabetic handicap and sometimes played with insulin shots just before the match..

I doubt if Irfan can ever reach the success of Wasim. Even if he tries to emulate and catch him, India would be lucky to have another superstar.

He can be but he needs to work out few things before and have needs to work hard constantly, needs to pick up pace consistency in blowing yorkers, and his inswingers though wasim was a unmatchable bowler and Irfan cant be that devastating bowler as Wasim

yes because wasim was a left hander and he is also an left hander
2)wasim once gaved training to irfan pathan from that time he is bowling wonderfully
3)pathan is young and he is not having any techniques so when he will be grown at 25 age then he will get some techniques
4)pathan was given chance to play cricket because of wasim
wsim once saw pathan playing in his county side and he was happy about his performance and actually he wanted to take him into the pakistan team but pathan got a chance because it was a test and pathan and he is now in indian cricket team.
5)pathan will also swing the ball but not that much like wasim and when he will be at a certain age then he will also learn to swing the ball.
6)if wasim will give training to pathan then he will be the highest wicket taker]
7)once in 2003 in vb series there was australia vs india and at that time wasim was in australia and pathan went to him and asked to how to bowl to australians and in that match he has taken 5 wickets but also india lost by 2 wickets.

I do not think that Irfan can ever be like wasim.Wasim was a player who used mind to play the game of cricket. But irfan is only a copier of wasim he has already soooooooooooooo hard to copy wasim but still hasn't been able to perform like him i think he will not improve more then this current state of his.

Irfan Pathan is a total waste and please don't compare him with greats like Wasim. This guys so called "match winning performances" always came against minnows like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. There is no point in promoting a player who
lacks talent and bowls slower than the slowest "Karnataka Passenger train" Venkatesh Prasad. This Pathan claims to be swinger....or reverse swinger and a lot of fundas like that....

Are Bhai....fast nahin hai to tumhare swing se koi fayeda nahin...
Batsmen like Pietersen will hit you to ponds outside the ground.

So ,Throw this Irfan non sense outside the Indian team and give
chances to world class talents like T.Kumaran, V R V Singh,
Gangesh Kumar and Ramsing Chowdhary.

He has definitely got the potential to become not only a successful bowler like Wasim Akram, but also got the
capability to become an allrounder.

Wait and see. He has the potential. What he lacks is the pace of Wasim. He would have to develop his pace beyond 140 km/h. He is able to swing the bowl both ways. He can reverse swing too. At present he is not at par with Wasim, but certainly he can be as successful.

Wasim is a great man. Who can forget, in 1993 the last day of the test match and our cricketing captain on debut Ken Rutherford was looking forward to his first test win. When he combined with Waquar Younis to topple New Zealand.

Those are big shoes to fill but I wish the young man the best of luck.
