Well, doctors help keep us healthy... sports and music stars entertain us... the government makes our laws based upon our wants... and scientists keep everyone in business... they're all highly paid... and, regrettably, HMO's make doctor's bills outrageous, entertainment is not a necessity in life, the government spends $500 on a hammer, and science has the attitude of "I'm always right, even when I'm wrong, and you're wrong to say otherwise".
Farmers feed us, teachers educate the next generation, factory workers make the things that everyone needs (either as an immediate need, or needed by someone whose services they need), and sanitation workers ensure you're not swimming in your own filth... yet they all make little more than minimum wage. They are the very ones that "make the world go around"... yet, because just about anyone can do those jobs, they are so poorly paid.
Doctors and scientists deserve to be well paid, but not so much so that it lends to arrogance and self-righteousness. Media stars do not deserve nearly as much as they make... but if people are actually willing to pay $25 for 8 songs, or $50 spending a few hours watching someone play a game, then more power to them. The government also deserves to be well paid, but not to the current extent that they are, nor do they deserve the right to give themselves a raise each year, as no employee gets to set his own raise or determines when he gets it, but rather, his boss. The government's boss is the people... and we ought to determine whether they deserve a raise for last year's accomplishments or not. Maybe by doing so, the government will actually be more efficient.

Who is the "we" who is doing the rewarding?
It's ok in that most of the people that are well paid who are residents of the USA are taxed higher so their money goes to pay to run this country. Others who "make" a lot of money do it thru investments, and that's a good thing too.
If you are asking are we paying the right people as in we continue to raise the pay for teachers, then I say "no", as I think teachers are overpaid. They not only receive good salaries, but are in their own union, and they receive benefits as well, yet the education of students doesn't improve.
In 1964 my income was $350 a month, as compared to $2208 or more today per month that is paid for the same job. So what you're talking about as increases in pay is because of the economy.
The best figures I can come up with for teachers is that here in 1984 they earned $17,000 and today they make over $35,000 a year (plus now a lot of benefits). Did their knowledge base go up that much or have they been able to graduate children who could even read or do math, the answer is still no.
As far as similiarities between best paid jobs go, one similarity in "salaried" jobs that I can think of is the level of responsibility, and the ability to get the jobs done that are required of you.

The principal similarity is that not many people have them. This is generally because those who have them are more talented in some regard than others, or at least are believed to be so by those making the appointment.
