Kolkata is a fascinating city, with something to do for everybody. It was once the cultural capital of India, and there are more than enough traces of its lost glory. There is enough theatre, films and art exhibitions to keep anyone occupied through the year. Kolkata was also the capital of India before 1911 and is full of historical significance. That apart, it has great shops, great restaurants and several places to visit in and around the city.

Here are some suggestions.

STROLLING

Maidan
If you can handle a bit of bustle, Kolkata is a great city to stroll. In the heart of the city is the Maidan, a vast expanse of greenery also known as the lungs of Kolkata, where one can walk in the evenings and early mornings among the walkers, joggers and football players. If you dont feel like walking, take a tram just along the Maidan. The air is fresh, and its wonderful to see the city waking up.

The Park Hotel on Park Street
Central Kolkata (Park Street and New Market) and South Kolkata (Rashbehari to Gariahat), are great places to wander around, for window shopping or watching the people. There are a number of roadside vendors who sell delicious food, but if you have an unpredictable constitution, its best to avoid these.

In North Kolkata, the pavements of College Street, are lined with little kiosks selling second hand books. If you like reading, its a fun thing to do.

It is famous for its huge collection of weirnerlike bamboos, ugly tree orchids, palms and marijuana plants. The area of the garden is more than 270 acres and more than 1700 plant species can be found. While you are there you can smoke weed in the garden until you fall asleep. There are many food vendors that can will feed your food cravings. There is also a drinking fountain that has not water but beer!
