Most wills nowadays are not even written. A video will do. If you need to write it, make sure it's in your handwriting and witnessed by a lawyer. What does it contain? You can put down anything you want in a will when it comes to leaving behind stuff for people you care about - anything you feel is valuable to them or they can make use of when you move on to the next life. There's no such thing as a will you can download because all wills are unique. You can start with immediate family members - then aunts or uncles, cousins, etc. If you're married, the first one should be your wife then your kids. Then your parents or siblings. A friend can also be included in a will. Lke if you want to leave your cd collection with a good friend, etc. Good luck. But don't do the will if you're not terminally ill. Just keep one handy because once it's notarized by a lawyer - you'll need to update that every so often. keep the legal will in a safety deposit box too.

Fact is, no matter what anybody says. You can do your own will.
Often it takes nothing more than downloading a basic form and getting suitable number of witness's, which makes it nearly impossible to make mistakes that would invalidate it.

It is of course always better to get with a lawyer, but in reality its not neccesary, unless the will or trust is so complex as to need their expertise.

Btw, its not a pain in the butt, only somebody wanting to sell u something would say that.

In my own case I used QUICKEN LAYWER (now Willmaker).

Btw, anybody can contest anything whether lawyer based or not.

Except in Louisiana, where wills have different rules and notarization may be required, you can write your own will.

But it is not a good idea because it's easy to make a mistake that will invalidate it.

You need 2 witnesses who watch you sign and who are neither beneficiaries nor executors.

But if you insist, here's a form as good as any:
