I dont mean like a religious thing at all- I mean biologically, what is the purpose of the beard?
I've heard the story about the munar nerve running along the jaw, and that a beard is to protect men from the feminine enrgy of that nerve. (A tale, of course)
But other than that, what have people thought beards to be for?

Women need protection from weather/sun/wind too-- not just men, so it doesnt make sense. Women can and did hunt back then, and do now. There wasnt so much sexism back then.... so that 'hunter' theory doesnt explain it....to me at least ;)

biologically..i do not know. but i do believe it is kind of a maturity statement. it shows their masculinity, and since they would most likely want to attract women, and women dig mature men, beard=so called maturity=women. i say so-called bcoz i dont agree that a beard = maturity, tho a man might think so!

In the months and years following the appearance of pubic hair, other areas of skin which respond to androgens develop heavier hair (androgenic hair) in roughly the following sequence: underarm (axillary) hair, perianal hair, upper lip hair, sideburn (preauricular) hair, periareolar hair, and the rest of the beard area. Arm, leg, chest, abdominal, and back hair become heavier more gradually. There is a large range in amount of body hair among adult men, and significant differences in timing and quantity of hair growth among different ethnic groups

A beard is the hair that grows on a man's chin, cheeks, neck, and the area above the upper lip (the opposite is a clean-shaven face). When differentiating between upper and lower facial hair, a beard specifically refers to the facial hair on the lower part of a man's chin (excluding the moustache, which refers to hair above the upper lip and around it). The study of beards is called pogonology.

In the course of history, men with facial hair have been ascribed various attributes such as wisdom, sexual potency, or high status, but also a lack of cleanliness and refinement, or an eccentric disposition.

Personally, I originally grew my beard because I was too lazy to shave. It does keep my face warm in the winter, but I didn't realize how hot it kept me during the summer. Now I get out my clippers and buzz off my beard and most of my hair once spring comes around so I am cooler in the summer. This also makes me look way younger than my wife so now she began dying her gray hair.

Men have beards simply because they have more of the hormone that causes hair growth.
Men used to grow beards to show status, wisdom or sexual potency.

In ancient Egyptian times, men grew beards as a sign of mourning and that was the only time they grew them because they generally thought them to be ugly.

In most recent centuries beards were simply a fashion statement. There were times when it was fashionable and common, and other times when it was a big fashion no no.

Biologically, men have beards so that they can blend in with a bush so that the predator can't see them. These days men have beards for varying reasons: hide a hideous face, try to look intelligent like Socrates, become inconspicuous.

Some men have short of full beards is to "cover" their double chins. Also some actually prefer it to shaving. They think they look good or have been told they look good. Some grow a beard then right after hunting season, if they shoot a buck, then they shave it. Tradition, I guess. That's all I can think of.

To hide my face, too keep it warmer in the winter, to tickle my woman,
I only let it grow in the Winter.
Actually it is because of testosterone, inject a woman with it and she will be a bearded lady

Why do you have hair on your head? Maybe it's the same reason, because you like it. Although some people use bears to keep food in them. I knew a guy that when he ate he got stuff in his bead and then he would sometimes eat it later for a snack.

feminists may ask - why do women NOT have beards?

Men have beards so their wives wont want to kiss and cuddle them so much - lets face it, it's a real hassle

facial hair is an alpha male signature, it says this is an adult male not a boy, women say it scratches
