He is a man with a drinking problem who did not use the best judgement both when it came to driving and when it came to common decency in the presence of others.
Give him a break... I think he has paid enough for having some flaws.

Guess others dont know the term "tongue in cheek". And yes, Mel Gibsin is a racist in my opinion. IShame, he's a good actor but I wont be going to any of his movies again.

I think it is neither - he is just sadly ignorant.
I do not believe he is *intentionally* trying to be racist, (though it may come off as such) and he just seems to me to not know any better. In addition, the fact that he is a celebrity seems to make him think that his social stature automatically makes him right in his assumptions, which actually in the end makes him ignorant and oblivious.
