They work very hard to build nests and lay eggs in those nests.
Those eggs hatch into a protected chamber and become larvae which will metamorphose into young wasps the following spring. If some sneaky fisherman doesn't harvest them for bait!

The few that survive hibernate, they are usually seen first in the following year and are larger. The smaller ones are hatched from the previous years stock.

before they die off the females lay there eggs and that is how we have them the next year.

Nice question!! Dunno, I guess as the other suggestions well er suggest they hibernate. I have always wondered where flies go when it is cold, not winter, just cold. You know on a day in summer when it is dull or raining (English weather) Where do they go?

they hibanate as its too cold for the little blighters! i swear they hibenate in a radioactive site too as they come back bigger and bigger every year!
