I think celebrities are so important in America because unlike most other countries we do not have royal families. In societies that are built on a tier system (I don't want to say caste system because the American way is to work hard and some day you'll prosper) there is the need to idolize the elites in order to have some means of aspiration. However, I feel the need to have someone that's considered superior only perpetuates the system of low self esteem.

It's all because of the media. It influences us because everywhere we look, on TV, in magazines, on the internet, etc, we are being told that these people are beautiful and that every little thing they do is amazing and newsworthy. Because celebrities are so hyped up all around us, we are just getting brainwashed by the messages and as a result we get as obssessed with them as the media is.
The truth is, any normal person off the street could be interviewed, given a makeover and put on the cover of a trashy magazine as something to aspire to and people would show an interest. There are a lot of celebs out there who are famous for no reason at all, have no notable qualities to their personality and look like the back of a bus behind all the makeup and styling, but they're simply made into something they're not and we get sucked in by anything. That is the power of the media.

I have a theory about this....
In our modern urban environment we no longer have close ties with our neighbours and communities, but we still have a human need to gossip, to find out what others are up to, to compare ourselves to to find out if we are 'normal' or 'better' than others and to test our social status against.
Celebrity news and gossip, especially when it is humanising, like celebrities having babies or marital trouble, or when the celebrities are being slagged off, is very appealing to us. We can feel superiour, or envious and it gives us something to talk about.
It is banal, but I don't think it is more or less banal than say... professional sports or reality TV.
Some people need that.

Psychologically speaking, celebrities have fame and fortune that most people want for themselves. When people's lives touch the lives of celebrities in some way (like meeting them in person or getting their autograph), they feel like some of this fame and fortune rubs off on them which makes them feel powerful and better about themselves. Also, learning about the "dirt" and gossip in celebrities' lives makes people temporarily forget about their own problems while at the same time identifying with the celebrities' human frailties.

I'd like to know as well. Personally, I could care less about their personal lives. Most of them have more screwed up lives than mine. I sure don't idolize them in the least. I don't even get the whole taking a picture with them. No offense, but I could care less about seeing another picture of some actor/actress.

Hi Bobbi,,,,, i wonder this same thing,,, it seems the media wants us to concentrate on these temporary icons of the stage and screen instead of items that actually need our attention.... that could be a downfall to us in years to come..... ie; remember when Robert Baldwin said he would (leave the U.S.) if Al Gore did not get elected??? He's still here I see...... I was ready to go help him pack... and leave with his brothers,,,,,I thought they were Texan?? I guess I was wrong,,,,,,lol
Good luck

People want to be a part of something greater than them. they tend to look up to celebrities. I see them as rich trailer trash. I hate celebrities, and yes I live around the hollywood area. They are just people.

No Idea. I think they might need a "goal" something to achieve that they can almost never achieve. like being famous so what you look good there are plenty of non famous guys that look good. & you dont have to be bone thin to be hot. As for women: be happy with yourselves.

I have no idea why this is.
And no celebs are not like the rest of us at all.
They are mutated from being under public scrutiny or were just plain whack jobs when they started.
