Wool fibers have a barb on them similar to a rose stem. When wet with water or agitated, wool fibers slide around and the barbs get caught together either shrinking the weave or felting it. Dry cleaning solvent does not allow for the fibers to slide around thus preventing this problem.

Wool shrinks when it gets wet coz wool absorb all the moisture present in the oxygen and shrink. Then the woollen sweater doesnt even fit.

Animal fibers. All of them do it.

The fibers have a hollow core with sort of overlapping scales on the outside. If they get wet and agitated (as would happen in the washer, or, since you were probably hurrying to get out of the rain, even that may do it) the scales interlock and stick together.

I have no idea, it could eb soemthing to do with the way the wool is made, all that fiddling about to make it into thread, after all, we don't see sheep get any visibly thinner after being out in the rain
