I guess this song kind of hits home to me because I am a foster parent....
John Michael Montgomery
The Little Girl
(Harley Allen)

Her parents never took the young girl to church
Never spoke of His name
Never read her His word
Two non-believers walking lost in this world
Took their baby with them
What a sad little girl

Her daddy drank all day and mommy did drugs
Never wanted to play
Or give kisses and hugs
She'd watch the TV and sit there on the couch
While her mom fell asleep
And her daddy went out

And the drinking and the fighting
just got worse every night
Behind their couch she'd be hiding
Oh what a sad little life
And like it always does, the bad just got worse
With every slap and every curse
Until her daddy in a drunk rage one night
Used a gun on her mom and then took his life

And some people from the city took the girl far away
To a new mom and dad
And kisses and hugs everyday
Her first day of Sunday school the teacher walked in
And a small little girl
Stared a picture of Him

She said I know that man up there on that cross
I don't know His name
But I know He got off
He was there in my old house
and held me close to His side
As I hid there behind our couch
The night that my parents died

HELD by Natalie Grant

Two months is too little
They let him go
They had no sudden healing
To think that providence would
Take a child from his motherwhile she prays
Is apalling.

Who told us we'd be rescued?
What has changed and why should we be saved
From nightmares?
We're asking why this happens
To us who have died to live?
It's unfair.

Chorus:
This is what it means to be held
How it feels when the sacred is torn from your life
And you survive.
This is what it is to be loved
And to know that the promise was
When everything fell we'd be held.

This hand is bitterness
We want to taste it,let the hatred know
Our sorrow.
The wise hands opens slowly
To lillies of the valley and tomorrow.

Chorus

Bridge:
If hope is born of suffering?
If this is only the beginning?
Can we not wait for one hour
Watching for our Saviour?

Cats In The Cradle by Cats Stevenson. I felt sorry for the son
growing up while his dad was always to busy. Then after the
dad retires and finally has the time to spend with "his boy"
the son doesn't have time for his dad. The dad realized his
son grew up to be just like him.

Either Diamonds & Rust (originally by Judas Priest but covered excellently by Blackmore's Night) or Wind Beneath My Wings (from the film Beaches).
The first one is sad in its lyrics while the other is sad because of my association between it and the film.

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones.

Its a country song about a man that told a woman that he would love her till he died. She broke up with him anyway. The song goes on about how he loved this woman all the days of his life. The day he died is what George Jones sings about.. he stopped loving her today is another way of saying he died today.

You can hear it for yourself at the link below
