Are there any American actors whose accents while playing English characters were convincing? Which ones and how convincing? Which ones are really bad? I saw Christian Bale in Reign of Fire and then another movie where I was stunned to hear him talking with an American accent. He was so good at it I actually had to look online to see where he was really from. I was truly impressed.

To be honest most of the good actors do it well - it's just when they go for a regional accent like cockney or yorkshire that they fall afoul of having a bad English accent.

Some people are just good at accents. One of our daughter can adjust her accent as between British and American depending on whom she is talking to, and she does it subconsciously. Another has lived in New York for some years and still speaks with a British accent.

Hugh Laurie comes to mind as a British actor who can do American accents perfectly. The other way 'round two females come to mind: Meryl Streep and Renée Zellweger (and never mind that her parents are Swiss).

(Our daughter now in New York went to a posh elementary school in London for a year and had a stunning upper-class accent for awhile; but we went abroad and she went to French schools for years (she's now engaged to a French guy) and then to Edinburgh to university. She has a neutral, classless English accent and a barely perceptible accent when she speaks French.)

Brad Pitt did a pretty good accent in Snatch. Although it wasn't English. It was good though.

We are rather taken with Homer Simpson actually. He seems to express everything perfectly clearly whether in America or England.

Really bad ones? of course Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins. Enough to make anyone wince.
