In relation to what? What is the point of humans? What is the point of trees? What is the point of slippersocks? Just because a person thinks an animal is "gross and slimy" doesn't make it any less purposeful. Slugs probably think that humans are all "dry and hairy".

Most slugs eat leaves, fungus, and decaying vegetable material, but some are predators and most also eat carrion including dead of their own kind.

So as you can see slugs get rid of rotting vegetation and small insects, molluscs etc.

Everything was put on this earth for a reason, except wasps, i cant find a point to those horrible insects.

every thing has a purpose, a slugs purpose is to eat decaying plant material, and to be eaten by other creatures further up on the food chain.... by the way the french eat snails which in fact are not slugs.

Plant and animal species have not evolved from a human perspective (as in "what is the point...."), since in most cases, humans (and especially "gardeners") weren't even around then.
Species evolve because there is a "niche", and a species that occupies that niche has less competition and hence greater chance for survival.

Having trouble with slugs are you? To get rid or to control them, put a saucer of beer at ground level, and they will drink the beer and die.

I've seen those slimy little asexual gastropods overrun the sidewalks where I work. people told me to pour salt on them it makes them shrivel up and die but after 250 to 300 of them in few nights I decided they aren't worth the salt so now they are only good for stepping on and squashing their disgusting little heads.
at least there are only a few seen at night anymore .good riddance! and thanks for bring up the subject also!

To leave trails!

Feed them oats, they just can't stop eating them and explode!

They also hate dry stuff like sawdust.

I've just put shingle all round my house to stop the little blighters from comming it. So far it seems to be working!
