I had a torn MCL (slight) about ten days ago and its getting better with a brace. I never went to a DR. I have access to a gym but don't want to do the wrong thing.

YOu can do teh Stepper Machine to build the inner Quads. Also the Quads and Hamstring building machine will help.
The follwowing ACronym will be of help

As a child I had a knee injury and the doctor had me use an ankle weight and just lift and lower the leg to strengthen the knee again.

Seek professional advice would be my answer. If further damaged is caused by doing the wrong strengthening exercises you will have a problem with that knee for the rest of your life.

you need to go see a doctor about your knee, you could have a serious injury , then talk to the doctor about what kind of strengthening you can do for the knee. good luck

Go to a physiotherapist (physical therapist), you may need a doctor's referral but the physios. are the experts on this condition.They may give you a prescription of exercises but remember, you ar the one who has to take the "medicine".
