Yes it does! Ultrasound works by having sound waves at a pitch too loud to be heard passing through the stomach to bounce off the form of the unborn child. You'll have to see what sort of doctor yours is. Alot of doctors seem to be all for ultrasound, makes them feel more secure or something. When I went in for my first checkup at two months, I was very shocked that the doctor used ultrasound! The result was that my baby was bouncing around and wouldn't stop moving for a couple minutes! He said it wa s because I had a very healthy baby. I think otherwise! It probably hurt him! He moved so much that the doctor couldn't even get a picture of him! The second doctor that I went to was also a strong believer in ultrasound and used it at very checkup I went to. Weekly! She herself was also pregnant and said that she used ultrasound frequently to check on her own child. all that to say, unless you have complications and the doctor feels it's necessary, you shouldn't be neding frequent ultrasounds during your pregnancy.

Ultrasound technology uses sound waves to obtain an image of the baby. The problem is, some believe, that those sound waves come at the baby like a freight train which is why the fetus trys to move away from the source. Unfortunately, the poor fetus has nowhere to go. Working with doctors, most avoid an ultrasound unless medically necessary and I haven't known a doctor yet who would allow her own pregnant belly be subject to an ultrasound.

There is no evidence that ultrasound hurts unborn babies...however there is a type of ultrasound used called 'doppler' to hear the babies heart beat...sonographers are only allowed to use that for 30 seconds (max) to measure the heart rate because anything more than that could be potentially dangerous. Regular and 3d ultrasound that is used during pregnancy is fine...in order to hurt the baby they would have to leave the transducer (the object that is put on your belly) in one place for hours.

I actually watched a television special on this. They did multiple ultrasounds on pregnant mice, and seen adverse effects. Supposedly, when multiple ultrasounds are done, they make cells in the brain move to unordinary places. Examples they gave that could effect babies was that they could become left handed, have a speech impediment, or sit up late, b/c those cells were lost for a bit. I only watched this b/c for my current pregnancy (35 weeks) I had ultrasounds every 3 weeks. They were Stage 2 ultrasounds, which are more high frequency. Heck...I don't care if my kid is left handed! LOL! It is not supposed to cause any long-term, horrible effects though!!

I was told that when you have an ultrasound that it hurts the babies hearing because it is like a load shrieking noise inside. I know when I had my first ultrasound with my son he was moving all over the place and I actually passed out. I got a really weird feeling and I went out like a light!!! With my first pregnancy every ultrasound I had done was very uncomfortable. I always felt like I was going to pass out since I had like 5 or 6 done due to complications(too much amniotic fluid). I heard it is bad for the babies hearing. With my second pregnancy I didn't get any weird feeling when they did them and it was fine. It was really weird!!

I belive that the regular types of ultrasound technology doesn't hurt the baby at all, but the 3D imaging type ultrasound ones are in question. With the 3D one, you can see so many more details, but I think that if you was going to get a sonogram, then I would get the regular ultrasound. Just to be on the safe side...

The ACOG and FDA actually recommend that ultrasound NOT be done as a routine procedure, but instead only when there is a medical indication for one. Many caregivers choose to ignore this recommendation. Read the articles below and decide for yourself if it's a test you really want or need.

As far as I know a regular ultarsound does not harm the baby. However, there has been some concern that the 3D ultrasounds actually hurt the baby. They actually feel physical pain from it.

So far, there is no evidence that ultrasounds are bad for the baby. There is evidence that it does vibrate the DNA which can cause mutations (that is bad) but usually ultrasounds are only done once or twice throughout the pregnancy so it hasn't appeared to cause any problems.
