As of January 1, 2007 if you are flying between Canada and the US you will need a passport. If you are driving you can still get through with government issued ID such as a valid driver's license and birth certificate until 2008. I work at the airport in Calgary and have heard of a lot of US citizens being held up coming through customs because they didn't have the proper ID.

You will need a photo ID issued by the government
AND your birth certificate or militray ID if it is considered proof of citizenship ... you will need this more for getting back into the states than for getting in to Canada.
Have fun!!
