No it was just a hoax. Infact Mars was supposed to be behind the Sun and not visible on earth.

This is an Internet hoax. This August, Mars is actually behind the sun. The event was in 2003, and the e-mails have been circulating across the Internet every year since then. Even the 2003 event was seriously over-hyped. Type "Mars hoax" into any search engine and you'll get plenty of information on both the hoax and the actual event. Sorry that the answer to this is pretty dull. The event in 2003, while not all that it was hyped to be, was pretty spectacular. And in 2007, we're supposed to have a good viewing of Mars again, though nothing on the scale of these e-mails.

It's size was greatly exaggerated. Some people said it was going to be as big as the full moon- that is just impossible. There really wasn't much to see unless you had a good, big telescope. To the naked eye, it was a big, reddish star.
And Stuart K is thinking of Venus. Venus is visible near sunset and sunrise and is the brightest object in the sky. Mars is usually pretty bright too, but it's visible all night long sometimes.
