think shld be 8 and 6
(x-2) be smaller number. x is bigger number.
5(x-2)-2(x)=14
5x-10-2x=14
5x-2x=14+10
3x=24
x=8 (bigger number)
x-2=8-2
=6(smaller number)

6 times 5 = 30 / 8 times 2 = 16 / 30 -16 = 14

Let the larger number be "x" and the smaller number be "y".
Now, according to the first statement, y = x -2 ..........(i), and
according to the second statement, 5y - 2x = 14 ..........(ii)
Putting the value of y from (i) in (ii), we get
5(x - 2) - 2x = 14
=> 5x - 10 -2x = 14
=> 5x - 2x = 14+10
=>3x = 24
=>x= 24/3
=> x= 8
Substituting this value of x in (i), we get
y = 8 - 2
=> y = 6
You can verify these values of x and y as per the two given statements.
The first statement says 8 - 6 =2
The second statement says (5x6) - (2x8) =14 .
So the values of x and y are 8 and 6 respectively.

i think the answer is 6..
here how it goes..

one number is 2 less than the other..so..
x+2 and x

if 5 times the smaller number= 5x
2 times the larger = 2(x+2)

then...
5x-2(x+2)=14
5x-2x-4=14
3x=14+4
3x=18
3x/3=18/3
x=6

to check..

if five times the smaller = 6 times five= 30
and two times the bigger= (x+2)= 6 +2= 8 x 2
16
you have to subtract that ok?
30-16=14..

so its right..

another checking is:

5x-2(x+2)=14
5(6)-2(6+2)=14
30-2(8)=14
30-16=14
14=14

think of the two niumbers as x and y
If x is the smaller number and y is the larger
then,
y-2=x
5x-2y=14
From the first equation,
y=2+x
Subsitute that in equation 2,
then
5x-2(2+x)=14
5x-4-2x =14
3x=14+4=18
x=18/3 = 6
since y=2+x
y=2+6 =8

x=6and y=8

let the smaller number be x
bigger number be x-2
given that:
5x-10-2x=14
3x-10=14
therfore 3x=14+10
x=24/3
thus x = 8
therefore the smaller number is (x-2)=(8-2)=6
bigger number is x=8

If x is the larger number
5(x-2) - 2x = 14
5x - 10 - 2x = 14
3x-10=14
3x = 24
x=8 Larger number is 8 smaler number is 6

smaller number = x
larger number = y
x = y-2
5x -2y =14
5(y-2) -2y = 14
3y -10 = 14
3y = 24
y = 8
x =6
