well assuming you accelrating slowly so that any mechanical noises can be heard over the sound of the engine...

it can either be the wheel bearings or the brake pads sitting loose next to the discs, if its engine related i need a lot more detail!

Manual transmissions used to be almost quiet in the old days from lapping in the gear sets Spining the transmission gear set under load and spraying liquid grinding compound into the gear theeth Not used as much by manufacture these days! Unless you are buying BMW, Porsche, Mercedes Benz. Check and make sure the correct oil level is maintained. And some gear sets just whine and growl these days at low speeds in low gears and reverse. Crunching noise is sign of failure

as you can see by the answers you already have, there are alot of possibilities. More details would certainly help us answer you question more accurately. Perhaps you could let us know, make, model, engine size, auto or manual, does the noise go away completly after 1st & 2nd gear ????? You want real help then give us real details

Dont drive the car until you check the gearbox oil if it is low on oil it would make noise in gears.

i agree with trannyman we need details details details..... but all in all check your fluid levels and also check your half shafts or c-v joints..... mine r making a hella rackin' in 1st and second gear.

Is it a whining sound as if you were reversing?

Some cars do that. Mini metros made that sound.
