Hmm. Well, in every category, there are those that are the gold spun from hay. Personally, I believe the best questions & answers come from Society & Culture (main group) [or Religion, LGBT as subgroups] and from Philosophy.
Reasoning? Well, perhaps some people are correct in that they don't have any true accurate answer, as these subjects are quite... vague and can be answered in numerous ways... but that's what makes those sections truly shine. Those questions are those that truly ponder the intricacies of life... those that speak vehemently of their beliefs and make valid points and concessions with other responders' points, making it a great place to express oneself. These questions are fueled by inherent morals, lifestyles, mindsets that can be shared throughout the y!answers community.
Society & Culture & Religion& Philosopy don't have your average "Singles & Dating" questions that typically begin with "Do you think this is hot...?" or "Who wants to chat with...?"-- but rather... they ask profound questions that perhaps we wouldn't have thought to ask ourselves but have a chance to contemplate the different opinions that are possible and which would fit them best. They ask the why, the reason behind LIVING a certain way, or living at all... they ask whether it's REAL, regarding metaphysics, and NOT about who's hot and who's not, NOT about the latest trends, NOT about which movie is the right one to see, NOT about petty issues with certain boyfriends who were caught cheating... but instead DO have open-ended questions that regale the responder with an opportunity to reflect on their beliefs, be convinced of another's, or further convinced of their own opinions.
That is why... I'd say Philosophy, LGBT, Religion, and Society & Culture give the most intelligent answers. The other sections-- especially the teenage section frequented by... well, teenagers primarily, consist of questions that are yes or no, or about inane issues like sex preferences and the like.
If you want a question that makes you think... that makes you FEEL and not just type petty little words in the box, then go to Philosophy. Religion. and so forth. because that's where you'll find the best questions that receive the best answers.

Not too sure about this.... I am very bright but with no formal education and an intellectually inquisitive nature. I have a dry absurdist SOH and answer a lot of questions here, not only the ones that are conventionally intelligent, but also the ones that seem as if someone is genuinely hurt and needs my help, I am here to help, not to hinder. At the same time, there are a lot of seemingly dim questions that can be expanded on, "Is Dubya an Alien" for instance. A lot of imaginative mileage can be had from such inferior material. But I digress. There are bright PPL in every walk of Yahoo! answers, not only in the DIY Hadron Collider section. Get some in.

It's not the categories that give the answers, it's the people. The knowledgeable people or the dilligent ones give the most intelligent answers. Knowledgable because they're more likely to simply know the right answer, and dilligent because they look it up and write it all down, explaining it well. You'll find both types of these people in all categories.

Science, medicine, and mathematics most likely as to be able to truly give a correct answer you have to have a pretty decent education and have some brain power going for you. The most illogical are in the religion and spirituality pages, but there are some well thought answers there too.

No categories will qualified. It all depends on the individuals answering these questions. I must add there are some serious, much thought of answers from some of us, in the various categories.

The type of answers people give and the categories they chose to visit depend on their experience/knowledge/SOH/ability to express themselves.

Cricket. The numpties who just give one word answers or stupid replies are scared off by such a noble sport as cricket, leaving just the afficianado's to discuss and answer.

It sure isn't the politics section. It really depends though - I don't think there's any one section where the quality of answer is better.
