There are a number of factors depending on which the HR contacts a candidate after an interview.
1. Number of people to be interview after your interview. More the persons the more time it will take.
2. Number of open positions in the company for which you have been interviewed. If positions are more and number of candidates less then you might be contacted earlier. It will take more time if the case is otherwise.
3. Depends on business requirements. They would have interviewed now but might actually have a requirement for you may be a month or two or later.
There could be other factors too though can't think of more.
Follow up call after three days is fine in case they had not specified during the interview as to when they will get back. And once you follow up and they say that they will get back to you then ask for a rough time frame. And once that time frame lapses, send them a mail again or call up to follow up.
Its a real good idea to follow up cos it could be case that the HR has to handle a whole lot of applications and chances are that he/she might miss out on your application.

There isn’t a defined time frame that companies go buy, because they have to go through all the candidates and invite the ones back they feel have earned a second interview. If you want the job and interviewed successfully on the first round you should immediately follow up with a thank you letter(s) to all parties.

Sometimes it may take a little time for them to call you back. If they are doing a back ground check or any kind of testing that they have to wait on someone else for results they them self might not have the info back yet. Definitely call them around three days its always a plus for you to let them know you are interested and waiting for their answer. I help with our hiring at the mill I work for, and it never hurts for the person being hired to keep in touch. good luck I hope you get the job :)

They usually tell you at the job interview how long they expect to need before they tell you the decision. If they have failed to do so, by all means you should contact them. Do so unintrusively though, try e-mail first.
The 'rule' that you should wait longer for bigger companies is utter bile by the way - whenever I applied to IBM I got a decision within two days.

The bigger the company the longer you have to wait, be patient and don't call but make sure they can reach you (that's why I bought a answering machine), also, apply for more than 3 companies at the same time.
