I was told by a doctor that there is such a site. I have an option whereby all my landline calls are included in the monthly payment but, of course, 08 numbers fall outside of this. All 08 numbers should be free anyway, there should be no charge if phoning to report, say faulty goods.

What you have been told is true to an extent, but it is not something you will find easily.

08xx numbers are deliberately non-geographic. Some will be free (eg 0800 or 0808), some will be charged at local call rate (eg 0845). They are alocated by different telecoms companies and not on the basis of notional location.

There is obvioulsy a mapping or number translating service that redirects a call to a non-geographic number to a designated number (eg 020 xxxx xxxx). You can get decoding services for some numbers, but most are on a subscription basis. The second link below is for a search.

I haven't ever seen such a website. It would be hard to keep it updated because it would rely on people reporting the information back (the telephony provider is under no obligation to make the details public). In general, there is a physical number tied to each 0800 / 0845 / 0870 number (in the UK). Usually, you have to find out yourself, e.g. on the website.

I also have a deal where all UK landline calls are free, but not 0845 or 0870. In those cases, I go to the website (e.g. bank) and look for "calling from abroad" or "international customers".

yes the website u're talking about is www.saynoto0870.com
you can search respective landline numbers by putting in 08 numbers. You can also search for a company's landline number by entering the company name

Hope that answers the question :)

YES, there is - Saynoto0870, the link is below, please add to the list of numbers if you know any! I'm in the same boat as you, with Telewest, unlimited local calls to all local and national numbers, but not 'Non Geographic' 0845 and 0870, which cost extra. I hate the bloody things and will NOT use any one that has them, except in extreme emergencies!!
