To be a social worker of any kind you will have to go to uni,I doubt you can get a work placement as one as the traing you need is extensive.Anyway good luck to you as it is a massivley rewarding job!

your best bet might be a community based organization where they are grant funded. they generally take trainees and students and are also contracted to provide an interface of supervision between the trainee and their school. Examples of CBOs are Salvation Army, Community Association of Progressive Dominicans, etc.
