I don't believe that it's wise to generalize with something like that. I would have to say that I believe that some people make good managers, others do not, and gender is not a determining factor. Other factors, such as education, experience, etc. would be more likely to determine whether or not a person will be a good manager.

Actually, there was a study done recently on this very same question. My personal experience has been that I've worked better with female managers, but the survey concluded that men are perceived as better managers, including 70% of women who indicated they would rather have a male manager rather than a female manager. Female managers are seen as typically more moody and emotionally unstable, according to the survey. That hasn't been my experience at all, but I have heard stories that confirms it as well.

As a female leader I tell you yes...just kidding. Men and women bring different set of leadership skills to the workplace. The mistake we all make at times is to stereotype somebody just because of gender...comments like "she is a woman; therefore, she must be touchy-feely", or " he has not empathy; after all, he is a guy" are comments that I hear frequently in the work place. In a perfect business world, individuals will be judged by their ability to increase stockholder equity in an environment conducive to enabling employees to reach their highest potential. That said, we are all humans and will make mistakes. So, due to these imperfections we transition to conversations and questions like the one I am addressing today.

The short answer...it depends. And that is the truth.
