G'day Krystal Engel,

Thank you for your question.

There are two types of rugby in Australia rugby union and rugby league. Rugby union is normally played by teams with 15 players, although there is also rugby sevens, a quicker game with 7 players a side. The name comes from the name of the game's original governing body, the Rugby Football Union with the game originating at the Rugby school in England. It is one of the two codes of rugby, the other being rugby league.

Rugby league has 13 players on the field as opposed to 15 for rugby union. Rugby league was initially played by a breakaway faction of the English Rugby Football Union (RFU) known as the Northern Union. When similar breakaway factions occurred from RFU-affiliated Rugby Unions in Australia and New Zealand, in 1907 and 1908 they formed associations known as Rugby Leagues and used the modified Northern Union rules. The Northern Union later changed its name to the Rugby Football League. Thus, the game became known as rugby league. Rugby league was originally professional.

The Australian rugby union team are known as the Wallabies with George Gregan as captain and Bob Connolly as coach. They are four provincial sides in the Super 14 with New Zealand and South African sides namely:

* the ACT Brumbies from my hometown of Canberra;
* the NSW Waratahs from New South Wales;
* the Queensland Reds; and
* the Western Force from Western Australia.

In rugby league, the Australian team is known as the Kangaroos coached by Ricky Stuart and captained by Darren Lockyer. The states of New South Wales and Queensland fight a fiercely contested series called State of Origin. There are currently 15 teams in the National Rugby League namely:

* Brisbane Broncos established 1988
* Canberra Raiders established 1982
* Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs established 1935
* Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks established 1967
* Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles established 1947
* Melbourne Storm established 1998
* Newcastle Knights established 1988
* New Zealand Warriors established 1995
* North Queensland Cowboys established 1995
* Parramatta Eels established 1947
* Penrith Panthers established 1967
* St George Illawarra Dragons formed in 1999 in a merger between the St George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers;
* South Sydney Rabbitohs established 1908
* Sydney Roosters established 1908
* Wests Tigers formed in 2000 from a merger of Western Suburbs and the Balmain Tigers.

The Gold Coast Titans will join the competition next year.

I enclose some sources for your reference.

Best wishes to you and your boyfriend and I hope I haven't confused you too much.

Regards

You need to know the offside rule, that will impress him greatly, you must also be able to spot when the opposing team passes the ball forward (which is not allowed) and berate the referee for not spotting it himself. You must also be able to comment on how impressed you are with the number of phases your team has played with the ball, you will surely surprise your bf with that.

Then you must know that the tri nations between New Zealand , Aussie and SA is currently being played. NZ have actually won it already due to their point score and that they have wiped the floor with the other teams.

Impress him with your knowledge that Wendell Sailor is suspended for cocaine abuse and how you dont believe that it was a fair judgment (Wendell is the Aussie winger).

If you truly want to disappoint him dont express how hot you think the opposing teams are. he wont appreciate that nugget of information.

Finally after having said all of that, rugby is a beautiful game that brings people closer together, buy a book that explains the basics and enjoy watching the game...thats the most important thing!

League or Union
League is a game played by tough guys its also a family game everybody can enjoy unless you go to a Canterbury game you might get stabbed or rapped
Union is a game that is slow and boring and the only scoring is when the ref stops the game every 10 sec and pays a penalty as for a enjoyable day out its fun to watch all the fans walking around like they have a pole up there A S S and the fans who think they are somebody but are really just a bunch of nobodies wanting to be a somebody

Yes, I will answer the call! Indians are unsportsman like in their pathetic attitudes, they very nearly get themselves killed in Hotels as well! Last Friday night I had to stop this dirty little Indian at the Rag n Famish Hotel in Sydney from getting killed with his smart *** attitude & disrespect for the Aussie team, by a bloke twice my size. Luckily this other blike saw the humour in it & what would have been an embarasment planting this little curry muncher on the temple! We may call a trouce during the Footy Off Season, I couldn't be bothered with the gayfl section as we have the Rugby League World Cup & Challenge Shield to look forward to.

When you first watch a game, it just looks like chaos. But figure out if it's Union or League, which is like the difference between Formula One and Nascar in the racing circuit. and then learn the main teams. If your boy watches a lot, perhaps it's as simple as learning the teams he likes and rooting for them.

Rugby is a great sport, but can be confusing if you didn't grow up with it or play it.
