Was it a joke? Did Grant/Naylor know what rimming was? Or was it all just innocent?

Yes they knew what rimming was, Rimmer was called Rimmer to give us an idea of the kind of person he was. Do you know what smeg is? Its not just a brand name for white goods!

What I don't know is what Lister might be a reference to. Something to do with mouthwash perhaps?

I'm 100% sure they knew what they were doing.

Rimmer was a toadying creep who sucked up to any authority figure, or if you prefer 'an a**e licker', which of course is Rimming.

I also think they knew exactly what they were doing with the term 'Smeg', the thing is it has taken people so long to work out what it is if at all !!!!

I never thought of that!! I was really in to Red Dwarf when I was about 13 and I was far too young and pure for that to even occur to me! Thanks for pointing it out and shattering what little was left of my innocence.

Oh it was intentional alright .. hence the inclusion of "smeg" as the previous poster said ...

Also a damn funny series in my opinion.

I think everything was all tongue in cheek so I think there would have been reasons why the name was chosen. How very rude...hee hee
