as small or open minded. To me small minded is a person who believes what they think they know to be true and are not willing to listen to other views on a subject e.g racism, homophobia and other generalised views. What do you think makes people think like this & believe it's ok to do so???

Although I don't doubt the integrity of people who have answered my question so far..... who will actually admit to being small minded, as those people never seem to know they are... so possibly I've asked an unanswerable question for some...?

We're all small minded. Your question is so subjective. As hip or with-it as most of us think we are, there are still alot of things we cannot tolerate, or relate to nor understand. The fact that having an "open mind" has become synonymous with "good", is small minded. Not all people feel that all things should be understood. Its a matter of relativity/subjectivity.
Theres a method to the madness/sanity of the ignorant many. And its called self-preservation. What indeed is good for the goose, may not be good for the gander. When you really look at it, we're all fighting for our individual rights, collectively. Go FIG! And its not close-minded people per se. Its more of the reaction they have to the constant excess of open-minded views. Some people just dont want to know everything. Whatever everything might be.
We, being is this growing individualistic society need to learn tolerance to earn it, honestly. How else will we be able to go forward as a whole. But that is in itself, a close-minded view.

I am now a very open minded person but it was not always the way for me... No, I did not find religion or anything of the sort. I went backpacking around the World!
I never thought myself as being small minded as my parents gave me a really nice 'hippy' upbringing at home. But, I grew up in a very small village in Cowboy Country Canada. Here, it was very homophobic, racist, close minded, and not very pleasant to live. So when I tried to voice an open minded opinion I was shut down and led to be an outcast.
It was only after graduating Uni and when I spent my first year or so with my backpack travelling Austrial-Asia that I began to lose what little i had of my small mindedness. To meet people from all colour, sexual preference, race, and Countries really helped me to open my mind even further and accept all the culture and ways that are out there in the World. 4 years later and 20-some countries along the line this small village Farm Boy is still going strong with his backpack and I am so glad I left in the first place.
My advice to anyone who wishes to open their mind, heart, or soul to the World. Grab a backpack and hit the Globe, it is an amazing place!

I agree with the first answer, I'm pretty open minded, but there is a fine line, if people try to push me to believe or practice what they do, and I don't go for that ever, no matter who it is, I don't compromise, especially when it comes to moral issues, beliefs and concepts on things regarding spirituality, good spirituality.

I think I'm open-minded.
I've always wondered why people are racist, etc..I mean their views are totally irrational, and yet there are so many people like this in the world.
Maybe its got something to do with conditioning and having pre-conceived ideas of another set of people. Once those ideas have established a place in their minds they are just too stubborn to let go.
Just my opinion.

I am very open minded.
The people who are not have a deep set fear of change and the uncertainty.
They know they are secure in their own mind and they do not want to leave that mental security even for a moment.

I believe people think like this because they have a lack of education.
