rip out the old bath, put in a chuband install ashower over that. A chub is a big square or corner fitted bath. Works a treat you only need to get the plumber to do the taps.

There are circular shower curtain arrangements that either hang from the ceiling or from the wall. There are also "telephone" shower heads that have that hose connector. You'll need a new tub spout with the diverter -- easy screw off-- white teflon tape to replace on the pipe-- and a way to hang your hand held shower head to the wall. -- there is one that has a stainless steel piece that is screwed to the wall and a way to move the diverter up and down that piece of metal for your height, et cetera.
Go to a big box store-- stand and look thru their bath books-- you'll see what I am talking about.
Be sure and do something about the surface around the tub-- if you're lucky you'll have tile-- that's great. However if there are any breaks in the tile-- you will have a problem-- because the tub is in an old house and wet backer board wasn't in existence.-- notice I didn't say you MAY have a problem-- you will.
good luck

This is a major undertaking for a non pro- the drain will not line up, notice the tub drain is at one end- the water supply will have to be moved up the wall- You can add a Shower Curtain to handle the water, it travels on a Track, add a shower head supplied external and new Faucet with a Diverter for the shower, that is the easy thing to do.

to have a shower you could buy a cheap shower stall at Lowe's for about $ 100.00 ,take out the bath tub,put the shower in the same place as the old tub.or you could put up a ring on the wall for a shower curtain, then add a shower head on a hose,it would be hand held, but it works.........hope you get the matter worked out............happy showering
