What extensions do you currently have running? Many will block active content like that. Don't go back to IE that's a wide open door to your system.

Firefox is a fully functional browser with a couple things turned off because they're incredibly insecure - mainly ActiveX.
You don't need a plug-in to view GIFs - Firefox does it naturally.
It's settings you have, not Firefox.
Do you have 3rd party images turned off / Do you have all images turned off?
Tools > Options > Content > Load images > for the originating website only.
"Load images" should have a check mark, "originating website only" should not.
It may be that Firefox is letting some other program be in charge of opening the gifs. It's rare, but it does happen.
Tools > Options > Downloads > Download Actions > View & Edit Actions... > Search (box) > type in GIF > if anything shows for "GIF" delete it.
Check to see if you have any extensions that block images... Adblock Plus will if you put in a filter wrong... there are others I'm sure.
Firefox is an awesome choice, but with all the options sometimes things get messed with.

Get internet explorer 7. Firefox is dumb. IE 7 is much more secure than IE 6 which most people use. And it is not a "wide open door" to your system. People just hate microsoft because it's the big kid on the block.
