Presumed photons??
Photons are quite real. Single photons can be detected many ways; one device that does so is called the photomultiplier tube (PMT). PMTs use the photoelectric effect, in which a photon ejects an electron from the surface of a metal, to detect individual photons. The photoelectric effect was observed experimentally by von Lenard in 1902, and these observations were explained by Einstein in 1905, where the concept of the photon was first explicitly introduced. That light had to be emitted and absorbed in 'packets' was first proposed by Planck in 1901 to explain the black-body spectrum of light emitted by a hot, glowing object.

The concept of the photon was introduced directly in response to experimental observations which forced the particle nature of light to be acknowledged.

I agree with Mark V. Another way of putting it is that you'll never get a fraction of the energy present in each wavelength to interact with matter. Each whole wavelength of light is an action h, plancks constant, and is indivisible. A bit like you can't get half a punch in the head!
