Talk about hitting home. My boss is the least motivational boss I have ever had. Barks at you constantly to get work done and calls you out when something is wrong, very little praise. My point is that I wouldn't mind the criticism if there was the occasional "good job". Do you have a company newsletter? Even the shy modest people still like to see their name in print. Maybe you could have some kind of quarterly award of recognition. Nothing major, but a blast e-mail acknowledging the person's hard work.

Praise them...but with a caustic twist...
Be sure to do it, in front of all the other workers, and loudly proclaim how much you appreciate their work, go through all the details of an act that they really didn't do, and say that you are considering rewarding them big time...then end it with a straight face to show you are being sarcastic...turn to them with same face and go...
"...the hell you did. Clean out your desk. You can get your check on Tuesday."
Walk into your office, while slamming the door behind you.

You just go up to them and nicely say; We really need to get this done.
These products are how we get the money to pay you.
If we don't make them the Company can't sell them, then you can't have a job.

Tell the person that you gave him or her the work because you knew that they were pefect for the job and that you knew that you could depend on him or her. Say that he or she was the only person you would trust to get the job done.

If you complement them when they do a good job. And explain what it is they did wrong if they didn't. I think you will see a big change in them. And it will get to the point were you won't have to say a word
