R& D stand for Research and Development
where research is searching for a new area or problem to which a solution is found. Develompnent is developing the solution which have got by reserach.

Research and Development. Its all about the doing a research on a particular area and developing new technology on that. it could be any area. For example many of the commercial companies have a department called R&D in which they trydo research and develop new technology which will the best among other. U can take some medicine company who do research for medicines for the disease, which will act in better manner than the existing one.
