Yes he is the one. His policy of non-violence and equality was one of the greatest achievements.
He may done some small mistakes. But his policy of non-violence and equality takes him to that first position.

Tough call - the greatest man in history. On balance though I would have to agree with this assessment; whenever people look for an ultimate example of evil in humanity's history, they don't necessary look very far back - they don't look at Caligula, or Nero, or Ivan the Terrible, they look at Hitler. Similarly, when people look for an unqualified example of good, they don't necessarily look at Einstein, Lincoln or Kennedy (good though they were). Some look at Jesus, but given he fact the Jesus that we know about was very probably an amalgum of two different people, I'd disqualify him from consideration. So people look at Gandhi, at the revolutionary idea he invented - non-violent non-cooperation - at his philosophy of equality and the abolition of "untouchable" status, and at the change he helped effect in the world - Indian home rule - and many people judge the Mahatma to be exactly what you say he is - the greatest man in history. I'd go along with that.

How can you single out Gandhi, alone? Are you saying all the other not-so-great people were not good enough? Gandhi was a good leader and followed principles of Islam, Christianity, Bhuddism and other faiths.
He was great no doubt about that, maybe I would call him one of the all time greats. There aint no such thing as the greatest man on earth!
And....please learn to spell!

Gandhi was a great man. But I think Jesus and Mohammed were the greatest men to walk the earth. Both influenced centuries of thoughts, wars, and devotion. Even Gandhi, Kennedy, Lincoln, Hussein, bin Landen, Blair, and Bush, are effected by these two men!

ya u r absolutely true. mahatma gandhi WAS d greatest man in this world. infact i would say he IS d greatest man in d world bcoz he is still there with. he is there deep within all of us. his teachings of non-voilence is world-wide accepted. he earned d freedom for india purely on non-voilence. today there is a need 2 understand and follow his teachings.
no one has seen jesus, allah, krishna etc. but mahatma is not lesser than a god itself. and d world has seen him.
but i would like 2 add he is not only d one. even people like mother teresa and mandela fall into this category.

I THINK EITHER U ARE IMATURE OR NOT READ THE HISTORY.. OTHERWISE U WON'TDO THE MISTAKE OF ASYING GANDHI THE GREATEST. IN MY OPINION IF HE WOULD HAVE ALLOWED JINNAH BEING THE PM OF INDIA THERE WON'T BE PAKISTAN OR HINDUSTAN. THESE DAYS WE ARE WASTING SO MUCH MONEY ON MAKINK ARMS & AMMUNINATIONS . RATHER WE WOULD HAVE SPENT THAT MONEY IN UPBRINGING OF EACH OTHER. SO FOR GOD SAKE NEWER SAY GANDHI WAS A GREAT MAN.

no he was not a great man, as
1. He rejected the conditions of Jinnah to remain India united.
2. He promised the kashmiris for the right of self determination but never fullfilled

A good man yes. The greatest... No
Gandi was a socialist and beyond that Gandi made antisemitic remarks. Research it and you will see it. But he did do good things. But he gets credit for much more than he deserves.
I would suggest Jesus, George Washington, George Patton, Theodore Roosevelt
To me they are much more deserving.
