Cult is when it stays popular long after its release.

It doesnt even have to do really well in theatres to become a cult classic, but a movie that isnt old cannot be cult.

I heard the first Star Wars movie didnt actually do all that well the 1st time it was released... its popularity grew over time, making it cult.

And for the record, i doubt Snakes on a Plane will EVER be a cult classic. It looks like total c**p - I cant believe Samuel LJ is in it.

cult classic is something that has no commercial success but has a great following in a group of people. These people will basically memorize the entire movie and live by it, name their pets and children after it and in the case of soap, probably buy snakes.
Think of star trek/wars fans, only suppose the movies didn't have the commercial muscle they did, and that's a cult classic.

Cult classics are usually movies that attract a specific group of people rather than broad range appeal. Most otheres outside the "cult" on any particular film gnerally think its just bad.

It's a cult film because the movie has been talked about, written about, photoshopped, parodied and is well known even by people who havent seen it. there are even SoaP parties!!

usually a film is a 'classic' after a few years have passed, but people like to put the words 'cult' and 'classic' together

I don't think you can purposely make a cult-classic film. They are determined to be "cult" based on the viewers, not the studio.

Rocky Horror, Reefer Madness, Evil Dead...These are all cult-classic movies.

Rocky Horror Picture Show was one of the biggst cult classics. The movie was pure ham but folks use to dress like the characters, shout out their lines and dance around the movie theater (crunching popcorn loudly).

cult classic is a movie that is so bad, it's good. A movie that was shunned by the critics, but loved by the public.
