embedded software is the term used to describe code that preforms a certain task in a stand alone device. Some examples would be a cell phone, iPod, TV Remote, or Garage door opener. There are many others also, basically anything with a microcontroller in it has embedded software in it. Another term used is firmware.

When you embed an Excel workbook into a Work document, you insert information (from Excel) from one application into another (Word).
