Same thing that I think about Nuit people.
Everything that I suppose to think is just a projection from Midia and few abroad elements.
Italy and Italians are one thing. Impressions are another think.
people whoi lived there but in only one place doesn't have right impression, once its only a small place. Any subject for analysis must be under high consideration and not just a levian affirmation.
I have the opportunity to confirm that once I lived there during 2 years. (Rome/Milan and I've travelled a lot, knowing deeply how Italians and Italy are - I've also take special consideration about history, beyond Rome).

Depends where you go and what areas of the city, like any other place, there are always good and bad.
Verona was beautiful! the people were remarkably polite and helpful. A truely wonderful experience. and the icecream was good too. we went 2005 during a storm season that followed us on our tour of europe, starting in France and ending in Prague. We had a train fire on the way from Florence to verona, with a train full of school children... and they were no different to us, bloody annoying and all the lads wanted to do was sit on girls laps throughout the journey.
Venice was great, except for all the tourists with their umbrellas, and traders with their handbags everywhere on the streets, but it was entertaining on the Campo Santa Margarita.
Rome was hot! over 40c when we arrived. It was great however the tourists and tourguides really do make it feel like a theme park at times... summer not the best time to go i guess.

I love them both and I'm a full blooded Anglo Saxon who's ancestors were trampled upon by the Roman's (well.....probably!).
Great food, chic, fantastic designers, fast cars, georgous motorbikes, lovely language, wine, scenery, climate, passionate.........what's not to like?
Just stay away from the Bay of Naples, they are the dregs of the earth, the reason Pompeii erupted and tried to swallow them up. Even the Italians dislike the Napolian's.

I will not really comment on Italy the place as it is what it is as for me it's all about the Italian people as a lot of Italian folk can be whizzy around non laid back people who are lovely but a lot of them will insist on starting arguments on absolutely anything, especially non pre arranged items which must be talked about and discussed at serious length first, as they like things to be and above all look right. However these same people in their own homes can be quite different.
These lovely verbal folk will tongue wag anywhere anytime over any situation at any place in a flash and they continue gestating at various levels of loudness at length, chancing there arm all the way, on anything from politics to a speck of dust, where it came from, who should have spotted it first and who’s going to sort it and when is it going to be done, you get the picture, it's all drama just to avoid things like a real fight or to get their own way or establish pecking order etc... and all of this can be done endlessly, personally I blame the hot temperament on the climate. Quite how relationships are managed is beyond non Italians and even some other Italians. To balance this they will dramatically bend over backwards to love and help you if you pass their 15 to 20 minutes appraisal of you as they will either accept or loath but of course this can change.
On the arguing thing they (well some I know anyway) will restart or continue arguments until they prove something or until there stood up too or exposed and then all settles and is lovely and calm till the next minor decision or action happens and off we dramatically go again. The best way to deal with them (when they are wrong or changing things around to suit themselves) is to right at the start 100% nail them with no half measures, stick in total conviction and they then be all yours for which you need to make the most but it’s real good. They will love to chat, look good and be in the midst or the in or top of everything going, but yeah maybe that’s no bad thing, in essence I believe… they love...
Also most Italians are extremely family orientated (involved with one could mean being involved with all and I mean all) and they very good with those they love and those they like and they do like things to be done right and it a particular way or order so it no bad thing and once you get used to it (it's easy to do so) you end up in the midst of doing all this yourself if you know what I mean eg. when in Rome, do as the Romans do sort of thing. Really they are grand, doing business would be another matter altogether with another set of idiosyncrasies as another things is they not to keen on following rules, but they are lovely when you know them and their constantly changing scores.

I think Italians are two faced and are scared of their own shadow. Very friendly and hospitable people (when they have to be) but they are horrendous to do business with. Due to the fact that they are highly family-centric, social groups are formed from the people they work with (more true in the countryside than the city). They won't get drunk because they are too worried about looking stupid. They spend half of their money on clothes and cosmetics and don't move out of their family homes until they are 40. Also they have loads of silly rules about when you can eat certain foods. Vatican city is one of the most corrupt places I have ever been!
