when in ghana recently there were signs at certain heritage sights notifying foreigners that they had to pay more. this is fine, many local people cant afford the tickets and also it promotes local interest. however, it did not seem to mean foreigners as i went with a group of mixed afrcan nations and a finnish girl, and only her and i had to pay more. they based it on skin colour. now, this is fine, the price was a pittance, but it shows that they see a major difference which suggests to them that white people are richer. so, is it unreasonable for a white person to feel wealthier and more important when those around them are treating them as such.

so my question, have any of you encountered this? and does it seem likely that this sort of thing prolongs an imaginary gulf between black and white?

some people seem to use bad language... thats not good. i went to ghana as a volunteer and i met a lot of wonderful people, i hate the feeling that people are looking at you as though you are a large wallet especially as a volunteer where you have very little money.

i meant to suggest that it is not good for them, as if they look at you as money they must consider themselves poor, which is not necessraily true.

What you describe underscores what I believe to be high level of low self esteem among many Ghanaians especially in the presence of whites.I'm sure you experienced sereval situations where you were treated "better" just because you are white.
This situation is not good. The unfortunate thing is that it has been ingrained in the mindset of many Ghanaians that whites are in some way better than blacks and that is what we have to fight against.
I'm a Ghanaian and was in a Canadian university for sometime.I therefore had the opportunity to relate to alot of white students and at the end of the day you come to realise that we are not that different.Indeed in some of my courses I performed better than my white mates.
All that i'm saying is that blacks have to come to the realisation that whites are no better or richer than us just because of the difference is skin colour.

The sad truth is there is always going to be someone that will complain about being a different race in this country. Even though the United States had made it possible to prevent white colleges but accept all black colleges, offer more educational programs and scholorships to blacks than white and still to this day put the blame on americans for making them slaves when most people alive now have not had one thing to do with that. It would be nice to give you good news for an answer but it is not going to happen that way.

Its the same across the Indian Subcontinent and South East Aisa.

It is based purely on skin but the reality is that most white people on holiday in these countries are considerably better off than the locals financially, this is a major boost to their tourist economy.

In answer to your question, it is not unreasonable for a white person to feel wealthier than them in Africa or Aisa because you probably are. But 'more important' no, because you are probably not.

F*ck man I'm white and broke as f*ck!!!!!

Seriously I have never been treated better then anyone. As a matter of fact i usually get treated worse as I am a young, white male, who needs food stamps just to eat, which seems to bring in more cop attention when i just walk down the street they are pulling me over and doing background checks because I look "suspicious". Rich people and old people are always staring at me and whenever some stupid @ss does any vandelism in my town my friends and I are the ones who are accused of doing it! And people who didn't like me just because my mom and stepfather broke up were calling cops complianing about my truck being too loud and me driving to fst, when I've witnessed their own jock kids banging a girl while she is crying drunk out of her mind! And no one feels sorry for a white male now do they? huh? huh???
Maybe in 3rd world countries people base their opinion on someone's wealth by their skin color, but here in the USA it doesnt matter what color you are if you are poor then you are treated like dirt!

That is just stupid! I am SO sick of hearing this crap too.. Racism is out there, it always has and always will.. People in Ghana have seen more of that than anyone in the past 10 years. Why would you go there anyhow?

And the fact is, I bet that white girl DID have a lot more money than people in Ghana..But why would that give her the right to be a snobby *****? That is just dumb

this is rascist technically. Although you'd find it hard to prove white people were being brought up in that area. They obviously see you as richer, and you are more likely to be to be honest. It just comes down to your feelings. If it pissed you off you simply shouldn't have paid and walked away.

i think what u will find in most African countries is that once a person is black unless they speak to you they are presumed to be from that country. but this is usually by the less educated people, the type of people u will find manning entrences to such places. the presumption is that only white people will come to tour africa, and the black people will not

and i knw coz i live in africa, and am black.
