Because some people do actually care about others. It is nice that people can make a living helping others with words and silly little trinkets. Sometimes some of us find it hard to find words to help others in a time of need, or B-day, or some occasion. These "crap" stores as you say are a place to go that will fill this need. Where did your B-day card from Grandma come from with the money in it? Or the graduation card with the Money in it come from? Or your first baby ornament on the Xmas tree come from?Guess you should turn down all that "crap" Huh.

Ah are we feeling unloved & unwanted today? Need a Hug? Yes in a purely holistic Universe one would sit cross legged naked beneath a tree contemplating life and would not need cards & geegads to express love & friendship but what the heck. No one NEEDS anything but it can sure be nice now & then getting a card or something that lifts the spirits & generates a smile perhaps a laugh. Peace.

I don't shop there much except for the 1 dollar cards. I can't afford it. But for those who can afford it there are beautiful items, photo albums, baby books, wedding items.

They are there for the people who remember every birthday, anniversary, holiday, and pseudoholiday. They are good if you forgot someone's birthday and need a little gift to go with the card too. That's about all I think they are good for...
