Fibroadenoma of the breast is a benign tumor characterized by proliferation of both glandular and stromal elements.

Most often it appears before age 30 as a result of estrogenic hormonal excess. Usually the tumor is solitary, multiple tumors being rare. The tumor is mobile to adjacent structures: skin, muscle, lymph nodes.

Fibroadenoma is a non-cancerous tumour made up of dense, fibrous tissue in the breast.

About
A Fibroadenoma is one cause of breast lumps in women, accounting for 12% of all palpable, symptomatic breast masses. It is painless, round, movable and firm and occurs most frequently in women under 25 years of age. It is uncommon in women over the age of 40. Fibroadenomas are affected by fluctuating levels of oestrogen and may lactate (produce milk) during pregnancy.

Cause
Fibroadenomas are believed to be caused by higher than usual circulating levels of oestrogen. The average Fibroadenoma grows to a diameter of 1 to 1.5 cm, staying this size until shrinking with the onset of menopause when oestrogen levels in a woman's body drop significantly.

Health care
If you feel a lump in your breast, see your Doctor as soon as possible. Treatment for Fibroadenoma is usually surgical removal under local anaesthetic. The lump is then examined to be sure it contains no cancerous cells.

Fibroadenomas are the most common benign tumors of the female breast. They can develop at any age but are more common in young women, often teenagers, and may be mistaken for cancer. They may be excised but frequently recur. Nearly 90% of breast masses in women are the result of benign lesions and are usually fibroadenomas. They do not increase the risk of breat cancer.

My Comments:

I hope you have seen a doctor. If you have, then you should have asked him this question. I am hoping, you heard this and you are wondering, what it is?

PS

A Post biopsy, microbial test can only tell if it is Fibroadenoma or malignant.
