when it scoops up food in the water it takes in a lot of water too, but, unlike fish the water cannot pass out through the gills. so where does it go?

There is a flap at the back of the throat that keeps water from gushing in. A few chomps, and the prey is dead. The croc then semi-closes his jaw to release most of the water, and then the valve allows him to swallow.

The water runs out between the gaps in its teeth.

it gets rid of the water through its eyes hence the saying crocodile tears
