He used the "net send" command which is a DOS utility that is used to send messages to computers within a network. The syntax(format in which the command is entered) is :
Assume you have a networked computer named 'CPU' and you want to send a message to it that reads 'Hie dude', go to DOS and type
net send CPU hie dude

in order to repay him you need to know the name his computer is registered as. to find this out "right" click the "my computer" icon on his desktop. go to properties and then computer name. that name that is displayed is the name you need. next click the start button ->run, and then type "netsend (name of computer hes using) (message)"
do not use the quotes or parenthesis and make sure you use spaces properly.
