They used to be shot with a blue film overcasting the actors so as to show what they were doing without being too explicit in order to pass ratings censors.

They are not shot that way anymore, obviously, but modern movies that I have seen the technique used in love/sex scenes that I can think of are "Top Gun" and "Highlander".

Maybe they used to sort and categorize videos at the rental stores by labelling them with colored sticky tape. And the color the used for adult films happen to be blue?
